Soldotna, Alaska: A Major Fishing Town on Alaska's Kenai River
ocated
147 miles from Anchorage, Soldotna is on the Kenai River,
and is a major fishing town. It was started in 1947, when
World War II veterans were given a 3-month preference on
homesteads in order to boost the population on the Kenai.
If you're interested in early modern life in Soldotna, stop
by the Soldotna Historical Society Museum on Centennial
Park Road, where you can see artifacts and examples of homesteader
cabins, including a territorial school in which students
studied by lantern-light. Now a major community, Soldotna
provides near-unparalleled access to salmon - including
kings, silvers, reds and pinks. The Centennial Park Campground,
in downtown Soldotna, is an excellent fishing spot. |
