Whittier, Alaska: A World War II Town
hittier
was originally a World War II town. It was built by the
military because of its location: on a deep water, ice-free
port. To get to Whittier overland, the military built 2
tunnels in 1943, which ran a total of 3.5 miles. Then, to
house its staff, the military built 2 large buildings -
the Begich Towers - in the 1950's. The Begich Towers are
still used by the 300 or so people who live in Whittier.
You can see them in the upper left of this photograph. |
