Portage and Whittier, Alaska: Drive to Portage Glacier

ifty miles south of Anchorage, off the Seward Highway Scenic Byway, there's a turnoff toward the Portage Glacier. The "Portage Highway" that leads to the Glacier has a number of scenic pullouts, some of which are suitable for those who are in wheelchairs or have difficulty walking. These include Moose Flats, Alder Pond and the Explorer Glacier Viewpoint. There's a wheelchair-accessible fish-viewing platform on Williwaw Creek, right near the visitor center, where eagles, gulls, dipper and ducks can be seen - along with salmon. There are several public campgrounds on this road.
