Palmer, Alaska: 5 House Styles at Colony Museum
hen
the Matanuska Colonists came to Palmer, they lived in a
tent city. Then they chose one of 5 basic house styles.
The Colony House Museum at 316 E. Elmwood in Palmer, represents
one of those styles - a small, basic farmhouse. Local people
operate this little museum, which is full of 1930's artifacts.
Palmer's "colonial" origins are celebrated in
many ways: in the middle of winter, for instance, the town
celebrates "Colony Christmas" with a community
Christmas tree and reindeer sled rides. A "Colony Museum"
is open daily in the basement of the log visitor center.
The Palmer Chamber of Commerce has printed walking maps
of the town, so you can see examples of the original house
styles available to the 200 Midwestern families that came
here in the Depression. |
