Palmer, Alaska: Farm Country in the Mat-Su Valley
he town of Palmer is located in the Mat-Su
Valley: farm country. Palmer is renowned for its giant vegetables,
which flourish under an almost endless summer sun. It is
also the home of the annual Alaska State Fair, which is
held in late August, and which features, among other things,
parades, fiddling contests, chili cook-offs, flower shows,
and ax-throwing contests. Colony Days, held the 3rd weekend
of June, is another major Palmer event, including a parade
and street dance, and offering a good glimpse of rural Alaskan
