North to Arctic Alaska: Drive the Dalton Highway

ou can drive the Dalton Highway (also known as "The Haul Road," from the 1970's Pipeline construction), almost all the way to the Arctic Ocean, 426 miles one-way. The road is gravel, there are few campgrounds and not many gas station, and the cost of car towing is very high. Nevertheless, tires can be fixed at Coldfoot and at the Yukon River crossing; and many travelers who have made the drive report that it was the highlight of their Alaska trip. Before you start, however, keep in mind that if you want to go on to the Arctic Ocean, you'll have to hook up with a commerical tour to get into Prudhoe Bay Pipeline Camp, such as one of the fine tour companies that contributed photographs to this section; independent travelers are not allowed.

Before setting out on any of the roads north of Fairbanks, be sure to drop by the visitor center and get current information. Photo: Northern Alaska Tour Company
