Nenana, Alaska: City On The River
enana
is a shipping port for 1,400 miles of the Tanana and Yukon
River system. Villages depend on supplies shipped to them
on barges. A powerful, modern tug, the M.V. Kantishna is
shown here tied up at the Nenana docks, waiting for barges
to be loaded. Everything from flour to propane to generators
and fuel is barged in to isolated river villages during
the 120 days that the river is clear of ice. Riverboat captains
have to be able to "read the river" so they dont
get stuck in constantly changing channels. |
