Nenana, Alaska: Camping at the Rivers of Alaska's Interior
elcome to Nenana! A bustling town on the Tanana River, Nenana
is 53 miles south of Fairbanks, and is compact, fun to visit,
and steeped in history. This is where the Nenana River flows
into the larger Tanana. Roughly translated, "Nenana"
means "a good place to camp between two river,"
in Athabascan. Nenana is a lively town with a strong Native
American community. It's an important port, providing vital
barge services to remote riverside Alaskan communities.
This is an easy town to get out of your car and take a walk.
Be sure to stop first at the Nenana Valley Visitor Information
Center, one of the finest in the state. It's right on the
