Moose Pass, Alaska: On the Road to Seward
oose
Pass is a little town on the Seward Highway, at Mile 29.5,
just past Tern Junction, that got its start in 1909 as a
roadhouse and trading post for miners on their route between
Seward and Hope. It's known for its waterwheel - which comes
complete with a sharpening stone. In 1927, a local family
built the original peltonwheel hydroelectric plant in Moose
Pass, to power a sawmill. Moose Pass has around 150 residents.
A big event here is the Moose Pass Summer Solstice Festival,
a 2-day family event. In this photo, a passerby stops to
"grind his ax" at the Moose Pass sharpening stone. |
