McCarthy-Kennicott, Alaska: Twin Towns
cCarthy
and Kennicott are twin towns that grew up during the development
of the copper mines. McCarthy was a boisterous, noisy town
that provided supplies and entertainment to the staid, no-nonsense
community of Kennicott, which was full of well-regulated
employees of the mines. The town of McCarthy, which has
lost none of its liveliness, is a half-mile walk from the
footbridge over the Kennicott River. Kennicott, now a ghost
town, is a little over 5 miles beyond McCarthy. Shuttle
vehicles driven over the frozen Kennicott River in the winter
transport passengers back and forth between the two towns. |
