McCarthy-Kennicott, Alaska: An Exciting Destination
he
road to McCarthy used to be a railroad track. This adds
to its sense of adventure. Watch out, though. That adventure
can include old railroad spikes, blind curves, and heavy
washboarding. Now you've heard the worst...here's the best.
Fantastic views of rivers and gorges - the Kuskalana River
Gorge, for example, a popular bungee-jumping spot a decade
ago - are visible along the McCarthy Road. And to top it
off, McCarthy and Kennicott are the most exciting destination
points you can reach by road in Alaska. They are located
in the heart of Wrangell St.-Elias National Park, the largest
park in the United States. At the end of the McCarthy Road,
you'll find a simple campground, with concessionaires available
to sell you hot food. After parking your car, cross the
footbridge to get to McCarthy and Kennicott.
