Lower Copper Valley, Alaska: Copper Center Bike Path
here
aren't many sidewalks in the Copper River Valley. But a
trio of German runners, anxious not to get out of shape
on their summer vacation, found one in Copper Center. The
Copper Center bike path was originally developed during
the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The Richardson
Highway now bypasses the historic gold rush town of Copper
Center. But in the 1970's, when the Pipeline was being built,
large tractor-trailers hauled huge lengths of pipe through
town, endangering its residents and young children; and
that was when the bike path was built. |
