Lower Copper Valley, Alaska: An Ill-Fated Gold Rush
n
1898, thousands of miners poured into Alaska by way of a
treacherous glacier route from Valdez. They battled bugs
and swamps, and almost none of them found any gold. Jaunty
at first, many staggered out after a bad summer. Others
stayed in Copper Center, where some died during the first
winter of scurvy. The National Park Service is building
a visitor center in Copper Center, due to open next year. |
