Hope, Alaska: Post Gold-Rush Tranquility
ope,
like many of Alaska's small towns, has a rich mining history.
There were six mines in the Hope region: the Hirshey Mine,
the Bear Creek Mines, Hope Mining Company, Lucky Strike
Mine, Nearhouse Mine, and Paysteke Mine. This photograph,
used courtesy of the Hope Chamber of Commerce, shows the
town that survived these early ventures amid the splendid
colors of early autumn. While you are visiting, you will
want to inquire locally about Hope's many trails: Gull Rock,
Wagon Road, Hope Point, Resurrection Creek, and Twin Lakes.
