Denali-Healy, Alaska: Miners Climb McKinley
owadays,
the recommended gear list for a Mt. McKinley climber runs
the gamut of high-tech equipment. It includes sun hats,
Gore Tex gloves, Ensolite pads, seat and chest harnesses,
hand warmers, ski goggles and bungee cords. But back in
1910, a hardy group of miners from the Kantishna area decided
to outfit themselves their way - in longjohns and overalls.
Two of these miners made it to the North Peak Summit of
McKinley, hauling a 14-foot spruce tree and a flag to prove
their feat. And instead of using "space food,"
they fueled themselves the old-fashioned way - with a thermos
of hot cocoa. And a bag of donuts. |
