Hatcher Pass, Alaska: Visit Hatcher Pass

isiting Hatcher Pass is a sure-fire way to prove to yourself that you have finally arrived in the North. Less than 2 hours from Anchorage, and 3,886 feet above sea level, Independence Mine State Historical Park offers pristine alpine scenery and historic mine buildings in the place where Robert Hatcher first found gold in 1906. The mines at Hatcher Pass employed up to 204 people, and in 1941 alone they took $1 million in gold ($17 million in today's currency) from the earth. You can get to Hatcher Pass most easily either through Wasilla or Palmer.
