Fairbanks, Alaska: Riverboats Past and Present
he
operating riverboats you see in Fairbanks today are made
exclusively for tourists. But they are an offshoot of the
Gold Rush of 1898. Steamboats plied the Tanana and Yukon
Rivers into the 1950's - a 2,000 mile round-trip that linked
remote villagers to the city. The Riverboat S.S. Nenana,
shown here - also known as "The Last Lady of the River"
- is on display at Alaskaland in Fairbanks. The boat is
232 feet long and has a 42-foot beam and 5 decks. It traveled
Alaska's rivers from 1933 to 1952. Inside the boat is a
330-foot long diorama that shows 22 Yukon and Tanana River
towns from 1847 to 1932. |
