Denali Highway, Alaska: A Special Place
laskans
have a special love of the Denali Highway. There are moose,
wolves, ptarmigan, bald eagles and waterfowl here. The views
of the Alaska Range and Wrangell Mountains are stunning.
The first 20 miles of the road, which starts at Paxson,
are paved to Tangle Lakes. There are two campgrounds at
the end of the paved road, which is in turn the starting
point of the Delta River Canoe Trail. Between miles 17 and
37 on the highway, there are 400 archaeological sites. Prehistoric
humans were drawn here by a quarry of green-colored flint
which they used to make arrowheads. Perhaps they also sampled
the berries which, from the end of July on, are unequalled. |
