ransportation
to Cordova is by boat or air. You can get on the ferry to
Cordova in Whittier or Valdez, if you'd like a slow and
scenic ride. Or you can fly into Cordova if you have less
time.
The previous governor of Alaska, Wally Hickel, wanted
to turn the railroad bed going to Cordova into a vehicle
road; but while half of Cordovans supported the idea, the
other half vigorously opposed it.
One of the obstacles that
the builders of the railroad from Cordova to Chitina faced
was the fact that glaciers come down from the mountains
and calve right into the Copper River; and today you can
see the Miles Glacier when you drive upriver from Cordova
along the short stretch of highway that exists.
In the end,
Cordova remains without a road, its unique lifestyle protected. |
