Eskimos normally lived on the coasts and Indians in the
Interior of Alaska, there was one exception.
The Kenaitze
Indians of the Kenai had a highly productive territory that
included both the Kenai coast and the incredibly rich Kenai
and Russian Rivers.
They had a large fishing camp near where
the Russian River Ferry now operates in Cooper Landing.
Over the past few
summers, young descendants of those early fishermen (who
caught their fish with dipnets, weirs, and traps instead
of modern rods and reels) have conducted several fruitful
archaeological digs in the region. |
