Anchorage, Alaska: A Tent City in 1905

he first 600 townsites in Anchorage were auctioned off in 1915, when Anchorage was a tent city serving the construction of the railroad from Seward to Fairbanks. At that time, Seward was "the big city!"

Things have changed considerably since then. Today, Anchorage has 260,000 residents, and 180 parks. Hothouse flowers hang from baskets all over town

Not long ago, an open can of evaporated milk on a restaurant table was good enough for your coffee.

Today, you can find flavored hot and cold lattes for sale anywhere. The photograph shows downtown Anchorage. The space between 1st & 7th Avenues offers an interesting evening stroll on most summer nights.
